YOUR ROLE AS ACADEMIC ADVISOR III: This position is critical to providing advanced academic advising and program support for undergraduate and graduate students, while partnering with faculty and staff to promote student success and timely degree completion.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and either 1) 6 months experience as “Academic Advisor II” at GSU (University Advisement Center or other GSU advising department) or 2) five years of related experience; or a combination of education and related experience.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for advising all senior students in the BIS in the Health Sciences program (currently 82 students).
  • Meet with students to help them complete academic plans for completing their program.
  • Collaborate with students to create Academic Improvement Plans if needed for academic standing or SAP appeals.
  • Assist students with registration for courses by engaging in outreach to encourage registration, authorizing students to register for appropriate major courses, recommending specific courses be taken in specific semesters, facilitating course substitutions, etc.
  • Troubleshoot student issues and assist with related petitions and other required forms (e.g., for cross-level registration, transient student requests, graduation in the current term, petition to use the first attempt at a course, etc.)
  • Assist students with options for completing non-course legislative requirements for graduation (e.g., Georgia History & Georgia Constitution).
  • Monitor and address any CPOS issues for these students.
  • Assist students with changing majors within the college and adding minors.
  • Review academic evaluations to ensure students are progressing towards graduation and to evaluate transfer credits; make exceptions as needed in Degree Works.
  • Regularly meet with students from other majors/colleges who are interested in potentially switching into Health Sciences to discuss program requirements, where their existing credits would apply towards the program, etc.
  • Connect students with other resources within the university (e.g., academic support programs, counseling services, career services, scholarship resources, etc.).
  • Audit graduating student records for satisfactory completion of all degree requirements.
  • Advise students in our graduate programs in Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy.
  • Advise students about academic/graduation requirements.
  • Perform regular audits of student academic evaluations .
  • Assist students with course selection and with authorization to register for courses.
  • Perform graduation reviews for students o Collaborate with students to create Academic Improvement Plans for SAP appeals.
  • Monitor and address any CPOS issues for these students.
  • Meet with prospective students to answer questions about the program and application process.
  • Attend info sessions/Open House as needed.
  • Coordinate and communicate regularly with undergraduate and graduate program directors re: academic/curricular changes and updates.
  • Assist in the preparation of reports in Argos and Navigate for undergraduate and graduate programs relating to enrollment, GPA tracking, and other matters.
  • Disseminate information on university policy and procedures to faculty and staff.
  • Make authorized exceptions/substitutions in academic evaluations for undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Assist in processing graduate applications for the Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy Departments.
  • Review files for completion in the CAS system.
  • Mark prerequisite courses in CAS for GPA calculation.
  • Respond to applicant questions/inquiries.
  • Place admissions decisions in Banner.
  • Act as liaison between the Office of Graduate Admissions and individual department graduate program directors.
  • Primary responsibility for scribing program changes/updates and new programs in Degree Works for all undergraduate and graduate programs in the college (seven departments).
  • In addition to inputting the actual scribing language in Degree Works, this involves a detailed review of approved program/change proposals and the course catalog to ensure requirements are accurately displayed in Degree Works.
  • Work closely with program directors to resolve any questions/discrepancies to make sure all requirements are clearly shown in students’ academic evaluations.
  • Engage in recruitment efforts for our undergraduate programs, including presenting at Panther Preview events, providing information at Honors College and Transition events, etc.
  • Training/mentoring Academic Advisor I’s and II’s across all programs in the college, along with university policy & procedure and student information and application systems (Degree Works, Banner, Navigate, Argos, Slate, CAS, etc.).
  • Provide training and program updates to academic advisors in the UAC.
