About The Position

The Academic Advisor II will provide academic counseling and assistance to support students in successfully completing their degree programs at the School of Public Health and Information Sciences. This role focuses on empowering students to understand the curriculum, navigate university policies, and achieve their academic, personal, and professional goals through effective advising techniques.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field and two (2) years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to social justice and culturally sensitive practices.
  • Exhibit superior customer service skills and professionalism throughout daily interactions and communications with students.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in Guidance and Counseling or a related field.
  • Three years of academic advising experience or related experience working within educational programs that foster student persistence.
  • Pre-Health Advising and Career knowledge.
  • Excellent communication skills, including public speaking.
  • Ability to build rapport and sustain relationships with students.
  • Experience and comfort working with diverse student populations, including but not limited to first generation students, low-income students, and underrepresented students.

Responsibilities

  • Provide academic counseling to prospective, new, currently enrolled, and returning students.
  • Explain and interpret School and University policies, procedures, and program requirements.
  • Assist students in the selection of majors and minors appropriate to their interests, backgrounds, and academic qualifications.
  • Assist students in following established procedures for resolving problems requiring action by unit and other University committees.
  • Empower students to plan their academic program, audit student progress toward degree completion, and certify student degree requirements in assigned program areas, providing added assistance where needed.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues across campus, including other advisors, faculty, campus offices, and administrators.
  • Promote student success and retention by assisting students in navigating academic difficulties and making needed referrals for additional support services.
  • Utilize advising software to maintain accurate and detailed advising notes, track students, and use data to identify student needs.
  • Evaluate student records and update advising materials, as needed.
  • Make presentations on academic topics to groups of new freshman and transfer students in conjunction with the University's orientation programs.
  • Represent the School and Advising Center at events both on and off campus, for the purpose of disseminating information and promoting awareness of School degree programs.
  • Contribute to routine functioning of the office and advising services, including unit and University initiatives that support retention and student success efforts.
  • Promote student success for all within UofL's diverse student population by providing student-centered, highly engaged student contact.
  • Participate in professional development and integrate new or improved knowledge into advising and student success practices.
  • Other duties and projects as assigned.
