About The Position

The Academic Advisor I provides guidance to University students on academic progress, courses, University resources, etc. Identifies courses to be completed in upcoming semesters. Explains University and College policies. May teach compass course as needed. Additional Department Summary: Advises undergraduate students with academic schedules, registration, and degree progress issues. Meets with prospective students and parents providing guidance and information on the School of Accountancy, campus life, student involvement, etc. Represents the school at student orientation and recruiting events. Oversees various programs and activities for current and former students in the college. Responsibilities also include class scheduling and meeting various departmental needs (i.e., teaching accounting specific professional development courses, assisting with events).

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or higher.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to needs of a population from various backgrounds.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including public speaking skills.
  • Advising with a focus on exploration, adjustment, and student success.
  • Ability to interpret student needs and determine appropriate recommendations and referrals.
  • Knowledge of the theory, principles, and practices related to academic advising or ability to gain knowledge in these areas.
  • Ability to collaborate with campus partners.
  • Computer skills to include word processing, spreadsheet, and/or database management.
  • Good planning, coordinating, and organizing skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret policies and procedures.

Nice To Haves

  • Masters degree preferred due to the responsibilities of this position.
  • Relevant experience with Banner and DegreeWorks are highly desired.
