About The Position

The Academic Advisor at Montclair State University is a vital role within the College for Community Health, reporting directly to the Director of Academic Advising. This position is responsible for providing comprehensive support services to undergraduate students, including both current and prospective students. The advisor will engage in a variety of advising activities, which encompass transactional advising related to course selection, developmental advising that focuses on personal, career, and major choices, as well as intrusive advising aimed at supporting at-risk students. The advisor will also play a crucial role in academic coaching, helping students navigate their academic journeys effectively. In addition to advising, the Academic Advisor will process all necessary materials and communications related to undergraduate students, such as changes in major or minor, credit adjustments, and other student action forms. A significant part of the role involves assisting students in understanding and successfully navigating the various processes, procedures, policies, and regulations of the College and University. The advisor will participate in advisement and registration activities across all academic sessions, including Fall, Spring, Winter, and Summer, ensuring that students are well-informed and supported throughout their academic careers. The position also requires the advisor to engage with students during campus-wide events such as Open House programs, Accepted Student Days, Transfer Orientations, and New Student Orientations. This includes conducting presentations to inform students about academic policies and registration information. Building and maintaining relationships with students, staff, advisors, and faculty is essential for providing effective referrals to other campus services, such as Career Services and Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS). The advisor will also be responsible for staying current with the latest theories and practices in academic advising and may coordinate intrusive advising for students on academic probation as needed. Overall, the Academic Advisor will represent the College and University at various meetings and events, contributing to the overall success and retention of students within the College for Community Health.
