About The Position

The Able Seaman position with the Alaska Marine Highway System (AMHS) involves standing wheel and lookout watches, assisting in operational and maintenance duties on the vessel, and ensuring security on board. Requirements

  • Valid U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) issued Merchant Mariner's Credential (MMC) endorsed with Able Seaman and Lifeboatman (PSC).
  • STCW (International) Endorsements: Rating Forming Part of a Navigational Watch (II/4), Proficiency in the Use of Survival Craft (VI/2), Basic Training (BT) (VI/1).
  • Valid Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC).
  • Valid USCG Medical Certificate (valid for 2 years).
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
  • Must be willing to submit to a physical and drug test.

Responsibilities

  • Stand wheel and lookout watches under the supervision of the Deck Watch Officer.
  • Read the compass to steer the specified course during wheel watches.
  • Remain vigilant for navigation hazards during lookout watches.
  • Assist the Boatswain in operational, maintenance, and sanitation duties on the vessel.
  • Monitor the car deck ramp and report any suspicious activity.
  • Operate deck machinery and participate in tying up and letting go of the vessel.
  • Assist in loading and unloading cargo.
  • Stand day watches and operate a baggage cart and forklift.
  • Splice rope and maintain rigging.
  • Wash down the deck and perform routine maintenance.
  • Remove trash from the vessel and serve as a member of the Emergency Squad as required.
