About The Position

UIC Bowhead Transport seeks an Able Seaman to assist with deck operations, including line handling, standing watch and off-watch duties, performing deck and engine security rounds, and fulfilling any assigned security or emergency responsibilities for its Anchorage, Alaska location. Additional tasks may be assigned by the Vessel Master or Mate as needed.

Requirements

  • Minimum of one (1) to three (3) years of increasingly responsible experience in the maritime industry.
  • USCG Rated as Able Body Seaman Limited with STCW-95 endorsements in Basic Safety Training and Lifeboatman.
  • Heavy Equipment Operator experience is required (loader, forklift, deck crane, skid steer).
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen and have a valid U.S. Passport with at least six (6) months prior to renewal.
  • Valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC -- minimum six (6) months prior to renewal).
  • Valid Driver's License with a minimum of six (6) months prior to renewal).
  • Ability to complete an annual Merchant Mariners physical exam and perform physically demanding shipboard duties.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain highly complex or technical topics to individuals with little or no background in the subject.
  • Writing skills require the ability to write text designed to communicate technical information.
  • Strong interpersonal/team skills and the proven ability to often deal with situations where immediate low-level satisfactory resolution of issues must be achieved.
  • Employee must be able to write in English, read in English, calculate, have estimation skills, possess good verbal presentation and be able to communicate using the radio, speaker, or electronic communication by using the English language.

Responsibilities

  • Adherence to company policies, USCG, and environmental regulations.
  • Representing the Company to guests, customers, the public, government, and other external sources.
  • Good seaman skills, including: ability and knowledge to proper vessel line handling; tying, throwing, clean, coiled, and stowed properly.
  • Performing a variety of duties concerned with the operation and upkeep of deck department areas and equipment.
  • Scales, buffs, and paints decks and superstructure; sweeps and washes decks; splices wire and rope; breaks out, rigs, overhauls, and stows cargo-handling gear, stationary rigging, and running gear; secures cargo; and launches and recovers boats.
  • May rig and operate hydrographic and other specialty winches; handle and stow oceanographic explosives; and stage and stow beach support equipment.
  • In addition, when assigned to watch duty, performs a variety of duties, including looking for obstructions in path of vessel, steering vessel, serving on security patrol, and standing gangway watch.
