About The Position

As an Abbey Mill Operator (Machine Operator) at Atlas Tube at Zekelman Industries, Kansas City, MO, this role plays a key part in setting up and operating the Abbey steel tube mill to achieve maximum production of pipe and tubing. This position provides direction to mill team members while ensuring production, quality, and safety standards are met. Requirements

  • Manufacturing or mill operating experience, preferred
  • High school diploma or GED, preferred
  • Ability to read, interpret, and use micrometers, pi tape, levels, tape measures, and other hand tools
  • Experience operating equipment such as overhead cranes and ground-operated machinery
  • Basic computer and math skills
  • Ability to read and write sufficiently to perform job duties
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Self-motivated with strong attention to detail
  • Ability to maintain accurate quality and production records
  • Demonstrated problem-solving and mechanical comprehension skills
  • Strong commitment to safety and quality
  • Team-oriented mindset with a drive for results
  • Work in a warehouse or mill environment with an uncontrolled climate
  • Wear required personal protective equipment at all times
  • Perform work in dusty and noisy conditions within OSHA guidelines
  • Work around moving mechanical parts safely
  • Use hand tools and production equipment as required
  • Work scheduled and mandatory overtime as needed
  • Meet additional physical requirements necessary to perform job duties

Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate the Abbey steel tube mill to meet production requirements
  • Lead and support Abbey Mill team members to achieve production goals
  • Monitor tubing quality and implement corrective actions when issues arise
  • Generate and apply tags to all manufactured bundles
  • Complete daily production records and time sheets accurately and submit as required
  • Ensure end welder micrometer readings are submitted with production documentation
  • Perform mill changeovers safely, efficiently, and in a timely manner
  • Verify setups using micrometers, pi tape, levels, and tape measures
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area
  • Attend and participate in scheduled safety meetings
  • Follow and enforce company safety policies and safe work practices
  • Support cross-training efforts and participate in cross-training as needed
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA guidelines, including lockout/tagout and machine guarding requirements
  • Submit detailed and accurate work orders for equipment issues as they occur
  • Demonstrate teamwork and effective communication with employees and supervisors
