About the position

The position involves welding simple to complex components and structures while adhering to safety, quality, and schedule requirements. The welder will work under the supervision of a Structural Supervisor and may instruct less-skilled workers. The role requires a high level of craftsmanship and the ability to work efficiently in various conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Weld a variety of configurations including single-pass and multi-pass fillets in all positions.
  • Perform multi-pass full penetration joint details for various joint and material thickness configurations.
  • Instruct and mentor less-skilled welders as assigned.
  • Maintain safe work practices and adhere to safety policies and procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with Austal USA standards and project specifications.
  • Work shifts or overtime as required, demonstrating flexibility.
  • Maintain a clean and organized worksite, keeping materials and equipment stowed properly.
  • Minimize waste of consumables and materials.
  • Complete daily work assignments and ensure quality standards are met.
  • Assist welders, fitters, apprentices, and trades assistants with daily tasks as directed.
  • Monitor the working environment for compliance with quality, safety, environmental, and health regulations.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED or two years of maritime experience.
  • Minimum of 1 year as a B-Class Welder at Austal or 2 years of GMAW MIG welding experience at a comparable employer.
  • Ability to pass A Class skills evaluation test for full penetration joint details.
  • Demonstrated ability to weld fillets for material thicknesses 4mm-25mm.
  • Good mechanical aptitude and ability to produce consistent quality.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and job specifications.
  • Ability to maintain and perform routine preventive maintenance on welding equipment.
