About The Position

The Postdoctoral Researcher in Quantum Materials at Brookhaven National Laboratory will focus on investigating the coherence and entanglement properties of many-body magnetic solid-state systems based on rare earths. This role involves collaboration between the National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) and the Condensed Matter and Materials Science Division, with a focus on developing experimental modalities to probe non-equilibrium properties and quantum computational approaches to describe the dynamics of rare-earth materials. The position is expected to foster a dynamic team environment and will be supervised by experienced researchers.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Physics or related discipline obtained within the last 5 years.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to interact effectively with a diverse group of scientists and technical staff.
  • Proven ability to disseminate research results through writing and presentations.
  • Good understanding of the physics of strongly correlated systems / quantum materials.
  • Strong data analysis skills, including proficiency in programming languages such as Python.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in spectroscopic or scattering techniques such as optical spectroscopy, lasers, x-ray scattering, neutron scattering, and photoelectron spectroscopy.
  • Familiarity with facility proposal submission procedures and effective completion of experiments in fixed time slots using national-scale central facilities.
  • Experience with or motivation to learn ultrafast laser optical systems, pump-probe experimental techniques, and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and perform novel pump-probe resonant inelastic x-ray scattering measurements on rare earth materials and other quantum materials.
  • Collaborate with theory members of the team and utilize other experimental techniques such as neutron scattering and scanning tunneling microscopy.
  • Work closely with the Condensed Matter Physics and Materials Science Division at the National Synchrotron Light Source II.
  • Disseminate research results through writing manuscripts and giving academic presentations.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary range of $70,200 - $85,000 per year based on qualifications and experience.
  • Comprehensive employee benefits program.
  • Opportunities for professional development and collaboration with leading scientists.
