About The Position

The City of Pontiac is seeking a Planner I to join its Planning Division. This role involves assisting in various planning and construction projects, ensuring compliance with zoning codes, conducting research, and engaging with the public to facilitate the planning and building permit approval process. The Planner I will work closely with other divisions and participate in the master planning process, contributing to the city's development and revitalization efforts.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Urban and Regional Planning, Land Use Planning, Public Administration, or a closely related field, or four years of related work experience.
• Strong research, technical, computer, communication, and public interaction skills.
• Sound understanding of planning and land use regulation processes.
• Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with co-workers and the public.
• Strong emotional intelligence to handle a fast-paced local government environment.

Nice To Haves

• Technical skills in ESRI GIS software, Adobe Design Software, and permitting software.
• Bilingual Spanish speaking.

Responsibilities

• Review plans for compliance with zoning code requirements.
• Perform research and write reports related to planning and construction projects.
• Conduct basic GIS analysis and prepare maps.
• Answer questions from the public and guide applicants through the planning and building permit approval process.
• Assist within the planning and zoning division as necessary.
• Work on concurrent projects and meet deadlines.
• Participate in the master planning process and provide municipal planning functions.
• Present cases to the Planning Commission, Zoning Board of Appeals, and other boards as directed.
