About The Position

The Public Safety Dispatcher is responsible for providing high-quality service to the citizens and public safety agencies of Lake County, Indiana. This role involves monitoring and processing emergency and non-emergency calls, dispatching appropriate response units, and ensuring efficient communication between public safety responders. The dispatcher must operate various communication systems and maintain accurate records while managing high-pressure situations effectively.

Requirements

  • Must be a citizen of the USA.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • No felony charges on record.
  • Touch typing skills of at least 35 wpm.
  • Pass a background investigation.
  • Ability to obtain certifications in specialized areas such as IDACS, CPR, EMD, EFD, and EPD.
  • Strong customer service background and multitasking skills preferred.
  • Previous public safety dispatching experience is desirable.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of street locations and common places in Lake County, Indiana.
  • Ability to read maps for accurate dispatching.
  • Ability to learn the operation of Communications Center equipment and systems.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.

Responsibilities

  • Operate all radio consoles and ancillary equipment to provide command and support information to public safety responders.
  • Dispatch law enforcement and fire personnel according to established policies and procedures.
  • Track and document the current status of personnel and equipment dispatched.
  • Answer incoming emergency calls for service, obtaining required information for a safe response, and entering data into the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) System.
  • Handle non-emergency and administrative calls, responding to requests for information or making referrals as appropriate.
  • Operate the Lake County IDACS computer system to support authorized public safety personnel and agencies.
  • Enter wanted/missing persons and stolen articles into the record system, and assist in warrant validation.
  • Provide self-help pre-arrival instructions to callers based on established priority dispatch protocols.
  • Maintain various forms, logs, and dispatch-related information according to established procedures.
  • Participate in special projects and assignments related to the mission operations of the Center.
