About The Position

The 911 Dispatcher position involves skilled emergency service work, primarily focused on receiving and responding to emergency and non-emergency requests for police, fire, and EMS assistance. Dispatchers must assess the urgency of calls, initiate first responder actions, and maintain communication with field units. The role requires independent judgment, effective communication skills, and the ability to handle stressful situations while ensuring public safety.

Requirements

  • One plus years of experience in administrative support, customer service, emergency communications, or a fast-paced multidiscipline environment.
  • Strong keyboarding skills and ability to follow procedures.
  • Ability to multitask, spell accurately, and speak English clearly and concisely.
  • Good public relations skills and ability to file alphabetically and chronologically.
  • Ability to work independently and/or in cooperation with other emergency communications personnel.
  • Ability to remember details after the fact.

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of a 40-hour Basic Telecommunicator Course.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain LEIN Certification.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain EMD / CPR certifications.
  • Ability to complete and maintain State of Michigan minimum training standards for Telecommunicators.

Responsibilities

  • Receive and respond to emergency and non-emergency calls via telephone and radio systems.
  • Process and evaluate information received, prioritizing calls and dispatching required units or agencies.
  • Monitor and coordinate radio frequencies, maintaining status and locations of public safety personnel.
  • Create and maintain logs of public safety communications activity using current technology.
  • Access and enter sensitive data in local, state, and national databases as necessary for investigative purposes.
  • Maintain appropriate security and confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Keep informed of department regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Perform minor maintenance on equipment or notify proper authorities for repair work.
  • Function as on-duty warning coordinator, disseminating public warning information as required.
  • Make decisions on unusual situations and answer questions as they arise within the Dispatch Center.
