About The Position

Alma School District is seeking a highly qualified, experienced, and motivated professional counselor to join our high school team. The Counseling Program is dedicated to effective communication, coordination, and collaboration with students, teachers, families, and the community to ensure comprehensive student support. Our mission is to foster students’ emotional and academic growth while preparing them for future career pathways and life beyond high school. The successful candidate will be committed to designing and supporting learning experiences that promote students’ intellectual, emotional, physical, and social development.

Requirements

  • Valid Arkansas School Counselor License or qualifies for Additional Licensure Plan approved by DESE
  • Holds or is working towards a School Counselor Masters
  • At least 3 years of teaching experience in a 9-12 classroom
  • Experience with academic advising, career counseling, and social-emotional support

Nice To Haves

  • Experience as a high school counselor
  • Specialized training in college and career planning with students
  • At least 5 years of experience as a school counselor

Responsibilities

  • Provide individual and group counseling to support students’ academic, social, emotional, and career development
  • Assist students with academic planning, course selection, and graduation requirements
  • Support college and career readiness, including postsecondary planning, applications, and financial aid guidance
  • Monitor student progress and intervene as needed to promote academic success
  • Collaborate with teachers, administrators, parents/guardians, and community agencies
  • Maintain accurate and confidential student records in compliance with district, state, and federal guidelines
  • Participate in crisis intervention, threat assessment, and student support teams
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive school counseling program aligned with district goals
  • Advocate for students’ academic achievement, equity, and well-being
  • Identify and address barriers to student success
  • Provide referrals to outside agencies and coordinate support services when necessary
  • Uphold ethical standards and professional counseling practices
  • Participate in professional development, staff meetings, and school events
  • Contribute to a safe, inclusive, and supportive school environment
  • Familiarity with school information systems and student data management
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills
  • Ability to build positive relationships with students, families, and staff
  • Knowledge of adolescent development and counseling best practices
  • Effective problem-solving and conflict-resolution skills
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise professional judgment
  • Cultural competence and commitment to equity and inclusion
