About the position

Glenview Public Safety Dispatch Center (GPSDC) is now accepting Lateral applications for the position of 9-1-1 Public Safety Telecommunicator. GPSDC is committed to providing a best-in-class 911 experience to the communities it serves. The center dispatches for 14 communities and operates two dispatch centers located in Glenview and Highland Park, serving approximately 240,000 residents and handling around 300,000 calls annually. The Telecommunicator role involves receiving and processing emergency and non-emergency calls, determining the nature of emergencies, and dispatching appropriate services. GPSDC operates 24/7, and Telecommunicators work 12-hour shifts, requiring flexibility to work any shift based on operational needs.

Responsibilities

  • Receive and process emergency and non-emergency calls from the public requesting police, fire, medical or other emergency services.
  • Determine the location and nature of the emergency, establish priorities, and dispatch police, fire, ambulance or other emergency units as necessary.
  • Maintain contact with all units on assignment, and maintain status and location of police, fire and medical units.
  • Monitor and process emergency alarms.
  • Answer and process non-emergency calls for assistance.
  • Enter, update and retrieve information from a variety of computer systems.
  • Receive requests for information regarding vehicle registration, driving records and warrants, and provide pertinent data.
  • Monitor multiple public safety radio frequencies.
  • Operate a variety of communications equipment including Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD), radio consoles, telephones and other computer systems.
  • Monitor dispatch equipment and systems; research computer records, update and maintain computer files and databases; answer routine questions, and complete general office duties.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 1-year full-time experience working as a 9-1-1 Dispatcher/Telecommunicator.
  • High school degree or equivalent required.
  • Clear speaking voice, good hearing, and excellent communication skills both orally and in writing.
  • Attention to detail and ability to work successfully with other team members.
  • Ability to work effectively under sometimes stressful situations.
  • Willingness to work days, evenings, weekends, and holidays, and be available for shift coverage with short notice.

  • Successful completion of the EMD and LEADS course as part of the structured training program.
