About The Position

The Broomfield Police Department is seeking dedicated individuals to join our team as 9-1-1 Public Safety Telecommunicators. Your role in 9-1-1 will play a crucial part in ensuring the safety of the public and field responders. Broomfield's 9-1-1 Communications Center is responsible for managing emergency and non-emergency calls for service within the City and County of Broomfield, as well as dispatching appropriate police, fire, and medical resources. The position involves rotating shift work, including days, swings, and graveyards, spanning Sunday through Saturday, including holidays and mandatory overtime. Requirements

  • High school graduate or GED equivalent required.
  • Two years of related experience in clerical, phone, or customer service work.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age and cannot have been convicted of a felony or disqualifying misdemeanor.
  • Candidates must pass a series of pre-offer and post-offer/hire processes including typing test, software evaluation, oral board, management interview, peer sit-along, reference checks, polygraph or CVSA, background examination, psychological, audiometric test, medical examination, drug screen, and fingerprint checks.

Nice To Haves

  • College level course in psychology, human relations, customer service, or related fields preferred.
  • Previous experience working different shifts is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Receive and prioritize emergency and non-emergency calls and digital requests for help from the public requesting police, fire, and other emergency services.
  • Remain calm and composed, even in stressful situations, managing conflicts effectively and dealing with frequent interruptions.
  • Demonstrate clear and effective communications with active listening, call control, judgment, respect, and empathy with callers.
  • Gather, analyze, and document critical information during life-or-death situations such as crimes in progress, medical emergencies, and fire/rescue incidents.
  • Document incident details quickly and accurately to establish incident urgency, categorize the incident type, and obtain the proper help for the caller.
  • Interpret caller location using geographic knowledge, tools, and location tracking capabilities.
  • Understand local and regional geography to quickly and accurately identify the location of an emergency and dispatch appropriate personnel.
  • Prioritize multiple events based on available resources and critical thinking.
  • Provide pre-arrival and post-dispatch instructions to those who require assistance during high-stress situations.
  • Operate radio equipment to dispatch appropriate resources.
  • Monitor local and area-wide radio channels for informational and operational purposes.
  • Operate multiple systems and conversations simultaneously without mistake.
