The Nueva Lower School seeks a full-time 4th Grade Lead Teacher who is passionate about integrated, project-based learning. This role collaborates with a grade-level team to design and teach curriculum connected to a year-long theme while supporting the development of foundational skills in reading, writing, and math. In a partially departmentalized structure, this teacher also leads the grade-level math curriculum, cultivating both strong foundational skills and deep mathematical thinking through inquiry, problem solving, and project-based learning. This teacher helps guide students through a culminating year-end project and co-chaperones an overnight trip in late April or May. Full-time teachers also support student well-being, differentiate instruction, write narrative reports, maintain a weekly parent blog, and mentor an associate teacher. The school seeks candidates who reflect the diversity of their Bay Area community and bring a strong commitment to equity and inclusion, aligning with Nueva’s Mission, Vision, and Values. A typical day involves welcoming students into a classroom that centers curiosity, belonging, and joyful learning, starting with a morning meeting to build community. Morning lessons might include math instruction grounded in problem solving, inquiry, and differentiated approaches. Midday, the teacher collaborates with the Innovation Lab team for computer science or design engineering, or leads small book groups. Supervision of recess in play spaces like the Forts or a field is also part of the day. The teacher participates in built-in team collaborative planning time to co-construct upcoming theme units that integrate social studies and design thinking into a broader project. Throughout the day, the teacher checks in with students socially and emotionally, adapting instruction to meet diverse needs, facilitating inquiry, guiding discussions, and supporting problem-solving. In the afternoon, students may work on thematic projects or prepare for presentations. The teacher connects with families through a weekly blog and collaborates with colleagues to refine curriculum and student supports. Weekly meetings with an associate teacher for planning and mentorship, and collaborative work with cross-grade specialists (math, learning, equity and inclusion, social emotional learning) are also key aspects of the role.
