Requirements

  • 3000 documented hours and proven DOL approved lineman apprentice program participation.
  • Working knowledge of the lineman craft.
  • Developing knowledge of the installation or repair of cables or wires used in electrical power or distribution systems.
  • Ability to understand and follow directions.
  • Must have all necessary tools.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.

  • NCCER Core Curriculum or equivalent Craft Training Program

Responsibilities

  • Use appropriate hand and power tools to properly measure, cut, assemble, install, test or repair cables or wires.
  • Help install, maintain, inspect, test, and repair electrical distribution and transmission systems.
  • Open switches or attach grounding devices to remove electrical hazards.
  • Climb poles or use truck-mounted buckets to access equipment.
  • Drive vehicles equipped with tools and materials to job sites.
  • Identify defective devices using wiring diagrams and electrical-testing instruments.
  • Dig holes and set poles using cranes and power equipment.
  • Place insulating or fireproofing materials over conductors and joints.
  • Splice or solder cables together or to overhead transmission lines.
  • String wire conductors and cables between poles, towers, trenches, pylons, and buildings.
  • Attach cross-arms, insulators, and auxiliary equipment to poles.
  • Coordinate work assignment preparation and completion with other workers.
  • Lay underground cable directly in trenches or string it through conduit.
  • Clean, tin, and splice corresponding conductors.
  • Pull up cable by hand from large reels mounted on trucks.
  • Participate in all safety related processes and programs.
  • Report all accidents and near misses to supervisor.
  • Participate in all pre-job work planning and safety discussions.
  • Understand and respond appropriately to all safety hazards.
  • Follow established safety rules and regulations.
