About The Position

The 4-H Camp Overlook Program Area Leader is responsible for leading a specialty program area at an overnight summer camp, focusing on the development and delivery of engaging and age-appropriate 4-H programming. This role involves overseeing campers and staff, ensuring safety and educational standards are met, and contributing to the overall mission of the camp.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age and meet minimum age requirements for the program area.
  • Subject matter background and experience in the assigned area.
  • Willingness to take required trainings for the position.
  • Ability to relate positively to youth and adults.
  • Willingness to learn about youth development needs.
  • Desire to work and live in a camp community, including overnight stays during camp sessions.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.

Nice To Haves

  • Current CPR and First Aid certifications (training available if necessary).
  • Supervising or leadership experience.
  • Previous camp staff experience, including being a camper or counselor in training.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with children and young adults indoors and outdoors.
  • Ability to relate to peers and accept guidance and supervision.
  • Ability to teach skills to staff and campers of all ages.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver 4-H programs appropriate for campers' ages and abilities.
  • Write lesson plans using 4-H curriculum that meet camp outcomes.
  • Evaluate abilities of campers and staff and deliver progressive activities.
  • Ensure safety and educational procedures are followed by campers and staff.
  • Assist in staff training related to the program area and enforce camp health and safety standards.
  • Supervise and organize campers during activities and throughout the camp.
  • Apply youth development principles in communication and relationship building with campers.
  • Maintain high standards of health and safety in all activities for campers and staff.
  • Provide daily care for campers, including health needs and medication administration.
  • Monitor equipment and facilities for safety and maintenance needs.
  • Be a role model for campers and staff in attitude and behavior.
  • Represent the camp positively to parents and campers on opening day.
  • Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities and assist in managing physical facilities and equipment.
  • Assist in planning camper activities and classes, including special programs and evening activities.
  • Evaluate the camping season and suggest improvements for the next season.
