The 3rd Step Apprentice or Journeyman Meterman at Black Hills Energy is responsible for testing, installing, and maintaining transformer-rated meter installations. This role involves performing scheduled meter testing, recognizing potential hazards, and ensuring the accuracy and functionality of metering equipment. The position requires a commitment to safety and quality service, contributing to the company's mission of improving life through energy for over one million customers.

  • Build and install primary voltage metering applications.
  • Test, maintain, adjust and make repairs to transformer rated type meters, panel meter applications, associated equipment and indicating demand meters.
  • Install and maintain meter telemetry and modems for remote meter reading and customer load management applications.
  • Clean and test meters for optimum accuracy and functionality.
  • Maintain meter installation records and verifications in the meter tracking system.
  • Install all instrument meter applications involving secondary current transformer installations and wiring.
  • Install all secondary transformer metering connections, both overhead and underground.
  • Install recording and check meters for customer load verification.
  • Develop and program meters with software for marketing and rate departments programs.
  • Provide information and support for all meters installed in substations, power plants and inter-tie points.
  • Provide metering history and information to customer account reps and managers.
  • Work with construction reps to ensure construction projects align with electric meter standards.
  • Install, maintain, troubleshoot and repair communication devices associated with Advanced Metering Infrastructure.
  • Provide onsite support for line and service crews and construction reps.
  • Order and maintain a continuous stock of various types of meters.
  • Obtain knowledge of new technologies on metering advances and testing procedures.
  • Perform current and voltage transformer calculations for customer installations.
  • Perform pulse and/or interval data calculations.
  • Test new CT/PTs for accuracy and recertify used CT/PT for reuse.
  • Perform calculations for internal meter multipliers for optimum meter resolution.
  • Conduct onsite meter installation analysis to determine integrity of installations.
  • Set up and maintain software programs used by BHP on metering devices.
  • Calibrate and test Electric Meter Test Boards & field equipment.
  • Actively participate on Electric Meter Standards for BHC and work practices.
  • Attend all safety meetings and other employee training as assigned.
  • Connects/disconnects, disconnects for non-payment, high bill complaints, customer service work.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Completion of vocational/technical school program for meterman, line mechanic, substation electrician, or equivalent required.
  • Ability to attain and hold a valid Wyoming driver's license.
  • 12 months of experience working as a meterman in the utility trade preferred for Journeyman level.
  • A Journeyman Meter Technician must have completed a qualified 4-year apprenticeship or 7200 hours of documented meter technician training.
  • Proficient in both written and verbal communication.
  • Able to work around energized systems.
