About The Position

The Third Mate is designated by the Company as an officer on the vessel. The Third Mate shall serve as the Officer in Charge of a Navigation Watch (OICNW) as directed by the Master. The Third Mate’s duties include, but are not limited to, the full implementation of the Company Safety Management System (SMS), Code of Conduct, Company Policies, and Company Mission Statement; responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the vessel, including, but not limited to the safe navigation and piloting of the vessel, the seaworthiness of the vessel, the safety of the crew and persons in addition to crew, protection of the environment, protection of the cargo or property of the charterer, industrial mission performance, charterer relations, bridge administration and paperwork, crew supervision and on the job training and other responsibilities that may be assigned by the Master or Chief Mate or that the Third Mate recognizes as essential to his/her responsibility.

Requirements

  • Possess all valid flag state credentials required by law for service as Third Mate.
  • A valid Passport is highly preferred.
  • Possess a valid riggers certification from a recognized issuing authority.
  • A valid unlimited DPO certificate is highly preferred.
  • Ability to read and write English and understand commands given in English.
  • Minimum one-year experience on vessels of similar size and route.
  • Active US Government Secret Clearance is REQUIRED.

Nice To Haves

  • Valid unlimited DPO certificate from a recognized issuing authority.
  • Experience as cadet, AB RFPNW, and/or OICNW.

Responsibilities

  • Implement the safety and environmental protection policies of the Company.
  • Motivate the crew in the observation of safety policies.
  • Issue and communicate appropriate orders and instructions clearly.
  • Verify that specified requirements of the SMS, Code of Conduct, and Company policies are observed.
  • Monitor the safety and pollution prevention aspects of the operation of the ship.
  • Report any deficiencies to the Master and Company DPA.
  • Serve as the OICNW and ensure safe piloting, navigation, and maintenance of the vessel.
  • Supervise deck crew, vendors, and sub-contractors as directed by the Chief Mate.
