The Teacher is a qualified professional educator who meets the requirements to teach in a Catholic school in the Archdiocese of Chicago. As a teacher in a Catholic school, the Teacher acts as a representative of the Catholic Church to the students, both as a role model and through the various tasks, actions and other responsibilities assigned. The Teacher is a ministerial employee because of their role as both a representative of the Church and as a communicator of the Church’s message to the children entrusted to the Church’s care. The Teacher cooperates with the principal and staff in providing an educational environment that promotes the ministry of Catholic education and represents the Archbishop of Chicago, effectuating his ministry of Catholic education and the religious teachings and doctrine of the Catholic Church at the local school level. At St. John the Evangelist, the school is a community grounded in Catholic faith, dedicated to supporting students to grow in faith, knowledge, and community. As part of a vibrant and close-knit parish, it provides a welcoming environment with a diverse student body, including significant Polish and Filipino communities, and families from a wide range of socioeconomic backgrounds. Teachers and staff are essential in shaping students’ academic development, faith formation, and sense of community. Using OCS Learning Standards, teachers utilize published curricula and their own resources for engaging and challenging learning experiences. Weekly all-school masses and frequent visits from priests and deacons complement regular religious instruction. Programs like Prayer Buddies and service projects deepen connections between students and the wider world. The school deeply values collaboration, the belief that every child can succeed, and a shared commitment to gospel values, aiming to uplift one another and support every child to reach their God-given potential.
