About The Position

Assist journeyman in Constructing, assembling, planning, lay-out, installation, testing and repair all types of boiler and auxiliary systems in accordance with all applicable plans, specifications, codes and industry standards.

Requirements

  • At least 2 years of experience working in the boilermaker craft or similar craft.
  • A working knowledge of the boilermaker systems and craft.
  • A developing knowledge of iron working techniques, pipe fitting techniques and methods for different types of boiler systems.
  • Ability to understand and follow directions.
  • Must have all necessary tools (see Boilermaker Helper Tool List).
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • All applicants must be able to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements.

  • NCCER Core Curriculum or equivalent Craft Training Program.

Responsibilities

  • Learn to use appropriate hand and power tools to fit and install all types of pipe and/or similar tubular products.
  • Use of bevellers, threaders and other end prep machines.
  • Cut or drill holes in walls to permit passage of pipes.
  • Select specified type and size of pipe, lift, position and secure materials and work pieces during installation.
  • Mount pipe hangers and brackets on walls and ceiling to hold pipe.
  • Install valves, couplings and other fittings.
  • Disassemble and remove damaged or worn pipe.
  • Assist in cleaning of boilers and boiler furnaces.
  • Learn to inspect or repair boiler fittings such as safety valves, regulators, automatic control mechanisms, water columns, and auxiliary machines.
  • Examine boilers, pressure vessels, tanks, or vats to locate defects, such as leaks, weak spots, or defective sections.
  • Install manholes, hand holes, taps, tubes, valves, gauges, or feedwater connections in drums of water tube boilers.
  • Position, align, and secure structural parts or related assemblies to boiler frames, tanks, or vats of pressure vessels.
  • Install refractory bricks or other heat-resistant materials in fireboxes of pressure vessels.
  • Participate in all safety related processes and programs as requested.
  • Engage with your work team to ensure we achieve zero injuries.
  • Watch for hazards and report any concerns to your supervisor or safety professional.
  • Report all accidents and near misses to supervisor; participate in investigation process as needed.
  • Participate in all pre-job work planning and safety discussions.
  • Identify safety hazards you or other employees may be subject to and take all necessary corrective action to eliminate and/or mitigate hazards.
  • Follow established safety rules and regulations and maintain a safe and clean work environment.
  • Use effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers and fractions rapidly and accurately.
  • Listen to co-workers suggestions, safety concerns, and recommendations.
  • Coordinate work with other crafts and co-workers on the job.
  • Actively participate in on-the-job training and mentoring opportunities with co-workers in your craft when provided.
  • Learn to read and understand plans and specifications.
  • Visualize two dimensional drawings in three dimensions.
  • Assist in planning, installing and/or repair structures in accordance with those plans and specifications.
  • Assist journeymen in laying out work and learn to perform layout independently.
  • Learn to observe functioning of installed equipment or systems to determine hazards and need for adjustments, relocation, or replacement.
  • Notify supervision of any hazards observed.
  • Examine/inspect field conditions and identify problems, inaccuracies, and cost saving measures.
  • If certified to operate equipment ensure that construction equipment is correctly operated, maintained, in good working order.
