Requirements

  • Possession of a Master's Degree in library and information studies (e.g. MLS/MLIS) from a college or university program accredited by the American Library Association.
  • Four (4) years of experience as a professional librarian, including at least two (2) years supervising other professional librarians.

Nice To Haves

  • Fluency in a variety of languages depending upon the department's bilingual needs.
  • 12 months (2,000 hours) of verifiable experience performing the duties of a Children's and Youth Services Librarian.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises the operation of a large branch library and programs; may be responsible for the supervision of a cluster of branch libraries; coordinates with staff, to ensure physical maintenance, security, staffing, and budgeting; may serve as a representative of a division as necessary.
  • Supervises and reviews the activities of staff; provides direction, support, training and evaluation; interprets and applies relevant policies and procedures related to personnel management to assist staff in resolving questions and problems related to library activities; participates in the recruitment of applicants for supportive positions.
  • Manages and interprets library policy and priorities to staff and the public and recommends new procedures, guidelines and policies to appropriate supervisor.
  • Keeps branch/department collection current by recommending and coordinating staff recommendations of library materials; develops collection through personal knowledge of materials available and may act as a consultant in a special field.
  • Performs reference work of a difficult and technical nature and requiring extensive researching and analyzing; prepares detailed bibliographies, book lists and other information.
  • Manages and promotes the development of positive community relations by performing outreach; develops strategic partnerships and working relationships; conducts presentations for community partners, and represents the library in the community.
  • Oversees, prepares, or manages budgets and makes annual recommendations to the division chief.
  • Supervises the processing and cataloging or ordering of library materials.
  • Manages, supervises and provides information and direction on the use of print, non-print, and electronic resources, such as the on-line catalog, Internet, databases and platforms.
  • Communicates effectively in writing.
  • Resolves concerns effectively with supervisors, staff, and the public.
