About The Position

Assist journeyman in the planning, lay-out, installation, testing and repair of all aspects of substation construction in accordance with all applicable plans, specifications, codes and industry standards.

Requirements

  • At least 1 year of experience working on substations or as an electrician or similar craft as a helper.
  • Developing knowledge of the construction, testing, maintenance, and repair of substations.
  • Ability to understand and follow directions.
  • Must have all necessary tools as per Substation Helper Tool List.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Ability to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • NCCER Construction Craft Laborer.
  • NCCER Core Curriculum or equivalent Craft Training Program.

Responsibilities

  • Use appropriate hand and power tools to properly measure, cut, assemble and install electrical conduits, cable and duct banks.
  • Hand dig ditches and holes.
  • Install control and distribution apparatus, such as switches, relays and circuit-breaker panels and install grounding leads and pull wire through conduit.
  • Work with high and low voltage systems.
  • Help test continuity of circuits to ensure electrical compatibility and safety of components, using testing instruments.
  • Rig and set large high voltage equipment, hang protective grounds, layout makeup and install wire jumpers.
  • Utilize equipment to excavate for foundations, layout and install ground grid, utilize equipment to spread rock, operate man lift in tight areas in an energized substation.
  • Participate in all safety related processes and programs as requested.
  • Engage with your work team to ensure we achieve zero injuries.
  • Watch for hazards and report any concerns to your supervisor or safety professional.
  • Report all accidents and near misses to supervisor; participate in investigation process as needed.
  • Participate in all pre-job work planning and safety discussions.
  • Understand and respond appropriately to all safety hazards and warning devices.
  • Attend site specific training and assure you follow all procedures as outlined in training.
  • Follow established safety rules and regulations and maintain a safe and clean work environment.
  • Use effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Coordinate work with other crafts and co-workers on the job.
  • Actively participate in on-the-job training and mentoring opportunities with co-workers in your craft when provided.
  • Produce quality work, meeting requirements of plans, specifications and industry standards.
  • Learn to read and understand plans and specifications.
  • Assist in planning, installing and/or repair systems in accordance with those plans and specifications.
  • Notify supervision of any hazards observed and utilize safety stop work authority as needed.
  • Examine/inspect field conditions and identify problems, inaccuracies, and cost saving measures that arise or that may be encountered.
  • Comply with Company Code of Conduct and jobsite policies.
