The Inpatient Pharmacy Intern will provide clinical and operational pharmacy services to patients admitted to St. John's Hospital. The intern will assist the pharmacy manager in the operation and management of the pharmacy as needed, providing indirect supervision for support staff and ensuring adherence to all policies and procedures. The role includes completing admission medication histories for patients, particularly those admitted through the Emergency Department, and training as inpatient pharmacy technicians with additional responsibilities as the intern progresses in the program.

  • Complete admission medication histories for patients being admitted to St. John's Hospital.
  • Train and work as inpatient pharmacy technicians.
  • Provide appropriate clinical care including patient counseling and prospective drug use evaluation.
  • Perform initial patient evaluation as it pertains to prescribed therapies.
  • Collect, analyze, interpret, and evaluate data relative to medication therapy.
  • Evaluate the significance of signs and symptoms relative to disease processes and make recommendations for drug therapy modification.
  • Monitor patient records for potential drug interactions and allergies.
  • Provide counseling and answer questions from patients, family, and healthcare professionals regarding drug therapy.
  • Ensure accurate labeling and dispensing of medications in a timely manner.
  • Identify and resolve patient-specific medication-related problems.
  • Ensure dispensing of prescriptions complies with legal requirements and Fairview Pharmacy Services policies.
  • Responsible for accurate and complete billing to payers.
  • Utilize technologies to ensure accuracy and efficiency in dispensing process.
  • Participate in team meetings with clinical pharmacy specialists, pharmacy residents, students, and technicians.
  • Adjust care approaches to reflect developmental levels and cultural differences of the population served.
  • Enrolled as a Student at an ACPE accredited school of Pharmacy beginning Fall.
  • Enrolled as a Student at the University of Minnesota School of Pharmacy.
  • Current Minnesota Pharmacy Intern License.
