The Department of American Indian Studies seeks students as Instructional Student Assistants. Appointments are contingent upon adequate funding. The ISA supports a lead faculty member with the task of grading assignments over the course of the semester. This position is responsible for reading and grading course assignments in a timely manner, following the grading rubrics provided by the professor, and meeting grade deadlines as determined by the professor. Work is performed on a weekly and semi-weekly basis as determined by the professor and may include meetings with the professor in preparation of grading assignments as well as working independently on grading assignments. Due to the nature of course work assessment, the ISA must use discretion, judgement, and maintain confidentiality in the assessment and delivery of grades and evaluations.

  • Provide professional non-teaching assistance to faculty members
  • Provide research assistance and practical experience in fields related to their advanced study
  • May involve supervising students in a classroom, workshop, or laboratory
  • Provide training students in the use of equipment or other resources
  • Assist faculty with research and preparation of course materials
  • Participate in evaluation of students' work
  • Tutoring students
  • Minimum GPA 3.0; Applicants with a 3.5 or higher are preferred
  • International students must have a TOEFL score of 600 or better
  • Demonstrated commitment to working effectively with faculty, staff and students from diverse ethnic, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds
  • Master's degree in-progress
  • Previous course work or degrees in American Indian/Native American Studies or equivalent
  • Knowledge of generally accepted theoretical and scholarly endeavors in the field of American Indian/Native American Studies or equivalent
  • Mastery of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation and competency in writing and research assessment
  • Demonstrate clear communication and collegiality
  • Ability to perform and work collaboratively under the supervision of a professor
  • Salary starts at $17.86 per hour
  • Flexible working hours up to 20 hours per week
