About The Position

The Department of Protein Sciences at Genentech is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Laboratory Automation Intern to join the BMR Automation team for Summer 2026. This full-time, on-site internship in South San Francisco offers hands-on experience executing, optimizing, and validating automated protein purification workflows in a collaborative research environment. The intern will complete a focused, project-based assignment supporting an internally developed automated protein expression and purification workflow for intracellular and membrane proteins, working closely with automation engineers and protein scientists to evaluate performance and support workflow readiness for routine deployment. This internship position is located in South San Francisco, on-site.

Requirements

  • Must be pursuing a Bachelor's Degree (enrolled student).
  • Must be pursuing a Master's Degree (enrolled student).
  • Bioengineering, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or a related scientific or engineering discipline.
  • Ability to follow written protocols and standard operating procedures (SOPs) accurately.
  • Basic laboratory skills and comfort working in a wet-lab environment.
  • Data recording, organization, and basic analysis skills (e.g., spreadsheets, plotting, summarizing results).
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to document work clearly and consistently.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work productively in a collaborative team setting.

  • Exposure to liquid-handling automation, scripting, or programming (e.g., Python) is a plus but not required.
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills, with attention to detail, documentation, and data interpretation.

Responsibilities

  • Execute and evaluate automated protein expression and purification workflows using established liquid-handling systems.
  • Support automation-enabled sample preparation and method execution, including lysis, clarification, and re-array.
  • Assist with programming, running, and troubleshooting automated methods and associated instrumentation.
  • Collect and analyze run data to assess automation performance and identify sources of variability.
  • Document automated methods and findings, and prepare a final technical presentation summarizing performance and recommendations.
