As a Grid Protection intern you will be supporting the development of relay settings to protect electrical systems of projects on high-voltage substations at voltages from 12kV to 500kV with the goal of providing excellent quality work for our client. This is a full-time, 10-week internship that begins in early June 2026. Work may be done remotely from any U.S. location, or hybrid from our Reston, VA office. At this time, we are unable to provide relocation nor housing assistance for this internship. Pay is expected to be $23/hour for an undergraduate intern and $28/hour for a graduate intern.

Requirements

  • The ability to work with and understand technical concepts, while also being able to communicate them to non-technical personnel
  • Basic knowledge of the electric grid
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Strong skills and capabilities in Microsoft Office (specifically Word and Excel)
  • By start date, a minimum of 30 completed college-level credit hours is required preferably in Electrical Engineering

Nice To Haves

  • A completed bachelor’s degree
  • Enrollment verification or graduate coursework complete preferably in Electrical Engineering
  • Knowledge of power systems
  • Advanced user of Microsoft products, specifically Word and Excel
  • System modelling or short circuit software experience (CAPE, CYME, ASPEN, ETAP)

Responsibilities

  • Assist engineers in short circuit model review
  • Assist engineers in the development of calculation documentation to determine relay protection set points
  • Assist engineers in the development of NERC PRC compliance documentation
  • Troubleshoot field questions from clients on protection related issues
  • Review relay logic design for accurate implementation
  • Configure settings files for SEL protective relays
  • Discuss within a team for continuous improvement opportunities
