2026 Summer Intern – Digital Endpoints and Patient Centered Solutions, Medical Imaging (Neuroscience Focus) Department Summary We partner with clinical teams to leverage complex datasets and external technologies, enabling advanced imaging applications that generate actionable insights at scale. Our mission is to unlock the full potential of data, to accelerate innovative healthcare solutions for patients and society. We aim to accelerate R&D and improve patient outcomes by developing innovative tools that enable faster, more accurate detection and monitoring of complex diseases. This internship position is located in South San Francisco, on-site. The Opportunity Machine learning and statistical algorithm development to facilitate image-based biomarker discovery: Develop and evaluate machine learning and statistical models in a HPC / cloud computing environment with clinical and brain MRI data. The algorithms serve a direct relevance to ongoing clinical drug development needs in neuroscience. Data Handling & Engineering: Work with large-scale 3D medical imaging datasets (brain MRI sequences: T1, T2, FLAIR, PD). Explore efficiencies in data flow from raw to analysis-ready datasets, including pre-processing, registration, normalization, and feature extraction. Experimentation & Validation: Conduct rigorous validation of algorithms using standard metrics to ensure robust performance on clinical data. Innovation: Develop new methodologies in machine learning and/or statistical analysis for data exploration and algorithm development. Driving proof of concept work to explore the usage of new software or analytical tools in a component of our work. Program Highlights Intensive 12-weeks, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship. Program start dates are in May/June 2026. A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship. Ownership of challenging and impactful business-critical projects. Work with some of the most talented people in the pharmaceutical biotechnology industry. Professional & personal development curriculum throughout the program, including networking opportunities, workshops, and panel discussions. Final presentations of project work to senior leaders. Participate in volunteer projects, social events, and team-building activities. Who You Are (Required) Required Education You meet the following criteria: Must be pursuing a Master's Degree (enrolled student). Must have attained a Master's Degree. Must be pursuing a PhD (enrolled student). Required Majors: Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering, Data Science, Biotechnology or related fields.

Requirements

  • Technical Expertise: Computer vision, medical image processing, ML/DL, statistical modeling, and feature engineering.
  • Programming: Intermediate programming ability in Python; familiarity with machine learning and statistical analysis libraries.
  • Frameworks: Hands-on experience developing ML/DL models is a plus.

Nice To Haves

  • Excellent communication, collaboration, interpersonal skills and team player; comfortable explaining complex technical topics to non-technical audiences.

  • Experience with 3D medical imaging data formats (NIfTI, DICOM) and libraries (Nibabel, SimpleITK, MONAI).
  • Familiarity with clinical data and medical images is a plus.
  • Experience with software development workflow, including versioning and code collaboration with Git.
  • Good knowledge of common CNN models.
  • Experience with cloud computing environments (AWS, GCP, HPC) and Linux command line.
  • Experienced problem solver capable of seeking help when needed.
  • Passion for learning and curious about drug development in the pharmaceutical biotechnology industry.
