About The Position

The 2026 Spring Intern - Data and Statistical Sciences is a 6-month internship located on-site in South San Francisco. The internship is part of the Product Development Data Sciences group, which consists of over 1,000 data scientists across five global sites. The mission of this group is to unlock the full potential of data to accelerate innovative healthcare solutions for patients and society. Interns will engage in statistical research, data analytics, programming, data engineering, and machine learning research, contributing to ongoing clinical drug development across various therapeutic areas.

Requirements

  • Must be pursuing a Master's degree or have attained a Master's degree no more than 2 years ago.
  • Must be pursuing a PhD (currently enrolled).
  • Majors in Statistics, Biostatistics, Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, Biotechnology or related fields.
  • Experience in R Programming, Data Science, Statistical Modeling, and Clinical Data.

Nice To Haves

  • Fundamental training in statistical and data science methods.
  • Familiarity with clinical trial statistical knowledge.
  • Strong programming skills, particularly in R.
  • Experience with software development workflow, including versioning and code collaboration with Git.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to explain complex technical topics to non-technical audiences.
  • Passion for learning and curiosity about drug development in the pharmaceutical biotechnology industry.

Responsibilities

  • Help solve statistical problems relevant to ongoing clinical drug development in areas such as oncology, immunology, and neuroscience.
  • Analyze real-world clinical data to derive data-driven clinical impact and business insights.
  • Develop or refactor code to create reusable R packages for data processing or visualization.
  • Explore efficiencies in data flow from raw to analysis-ready data sets.
  • Suggest and implement new methodologies in machine learning for data exploration.
  • Drive proof of concept work to explore the usage of new software or programming languages.
