About The Position

Do you love to develop new products? Do you really enjoy taking ideas to reality? Do you love to tackle tough problems? At Steelcase we're looking for a 2026 Product Engineering Summer Intern - Grand Rapids, MI to work with our engineering team to develop new products and solutions. We believe you will appreciate working for a company that values innovation combined with phenomenal resources. We have a major focus on learning by doing. We'll provide you with mentorship through the development and design process with a keen focus on sustainability. This is not a CAD only experience. Our previous students enjoyed the vast number of experiential opportunities ranging from utilizing our in-house model shop, test lab, to tours of our facilities and visiting suppliers. You'll learn quickly this company offers a diversity of products and materiality. You will work on projects that provide new value to the company. While you develop a product, you will learn and apply the design thinking process. Some previous interns have even earned their names on patents! You will be exposed to the engineering and development process including: Ideation, Concept work, Analysis, Prototyping, Testing.

Requirements

  • Pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Actively enrolled in a degree-seeking program at the time of application and throughout the internship.
  • Preferred academic standing: Juniors and Seniors.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and work ethic.
  • Experience or desire to learn solid modeling/CAD.

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrated creative problem solving and proactive learning.
  • Basic proficiency with computers, including Microsoft Office.
  • Experience with solid modeling (PTC Creo preferred).
  • Experience using statistical tools and concepts (e.g., EXCEL, Minitab).
  • Strong technical documentation and organizational skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Work with the engineering team to develop new products and solutions.
  • Participate in the design thinking process.
  • Engage in ideation, concept work, analysis, prototyping, and testing.
  • Utilize in-house model shop and test lab.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including marketing, design, and finance.
