About The Position

The Clinical Genomics Engineering Team at Natera builds and maintains platforms for technical quality control, variant interpretation, variant classification, and clinical reporting of Natera’s molecular diagnostic tests. We optimize development velocity across R&D and Engineering. We deliver high quality, reliable, compliant production clinical genomics applications and associated infrastructure with global reach and scale. We ensure clinical experts are in the loop for all of Natera’s patients. The Clinical Genomics Engineering team seeks an enthusiastic and driven undergraduate or graduate student to join our team as an intern. This internship offers an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in bioinformatics, computational biology, software engineering, and data analysis techniques. The successful candidate will work closely with our team of software engineers, scientists, and researchers on various projects aimed at building production-grade bioinformatics pipelines and infrastructure. Previous intern projects have included: Creating an AI-tool to facilitate the management of complex variant information Researching the current state of the art for AI in variant curation Automating export of data for submission to public clinical variant databases

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program in Computer Science, Engineering, Molecular Biology (with demonstrable software development experience), or a related technical field.
  • Proficiency in programming languages, specifically Python, with basic knowledge of Java as a plus.
  • Familiarity with foundational concepts in data management (e.g., ability to write and use basic SQL queries).
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Effective communication and ability to work in a collaborative team environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Exposure to bioinformatics or clinical genomics concepts, especially variant interpretation, clinical sample processing, or diagnostic report generation.
  • Familiarity with public domain data sources like Clinvar or gnomAD.
  • Basic understanding of full-stack concepts, including front-end frameworks (React/Angular) or REST API design.
  • Experience or coursework related to big data technologies such as Kafka.
  • Knowledge of agile software development processes and unit testing.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the design and implementation of software components using Python and/or Java for Tertiary Analysis workflows (e.g. variant management systems, SOP automation, technical review systems).
  • Investigate and support tools for variant classification and case review systems.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to analyze and document existing front-end applications built with React or Angular.
  • Contribute to the documentation of software architecture, development methodologies, and results.
  • Learn and utilize modern software development practices, including unit testing and version control (Git) in a Unix/Linux environment.
