About The Position

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development is seeking an Architectural Interior Design, Planning, Landscape, or related Construction fielded Intern to join its Facility Design and Construction Team. Tasked with campus development planning, interior space needs determination, and facility design and construction, the Facility Design and Construction Team provides an outstanding internship opportunity, allowing the participant to understand the vital owner and developer efforts needed prior to the arrival of an architectural or other design consultant. Located in Laurel, Maryland, midway between Baltimore, Maryland and Washington, DC, with connections to regional commuter transportation on a 460-acrea campus with over four million square feet of facilities, APL is the largest university affiliated research center, provides U.S. government agencies with innovative solutions and expertise in support of national priorities and technology development programs. APL serves as independent trusted technical agents to the government, providing opportunities for highly complex, multigenerational technology development systems. As an Intern in the Facilities Design and Construction (FDC) Group, your duties will include: Work with professionals to conceptualize building floor layouts and systems, in support of new and existing facility renovation0solutions Exposure to technical requirements for equipment systems and assistance in developing design solutions to accommodate requirements Participate in programming activities, including interviews with APL technical staff, requirements gathering, field surveys, and detailing existing facility conditions Support campus planning and interior space allocation professionals in managing the long-term campus development vision and effectively determining interior space assignments Routinely operate APL vehicles to move around campus to various buildings to attend meetings and transport ladders, PPE and other equipment necessary for field surveys

Requirements

  • Are pursuing an Architectural, Interior Design, Planning, Landscape, or related Construction degree field with a GPA between 3.0 and 4.0
  • Have the ability to collaborate on teams
  • Possess excellent oral and written communication skills
  • To access APL’s facilities and networks, U.S. Citizenship or permanent resident status is required, subject to applicable laws
  • Have utilized Revit modeling software
  • Performance of this job requires valid state-of-residence driver’s license in good standing. The selected candidate will be subject to a motor vehicle record check
