General Dynamics Electric Boat offers an unparalleled experiential learning opportunity for college students seeking for-credit, full-time engineering co-op experience within the defense industry. Students work alongside expert engineers, contributing to the design, construction, and lifecycle support of the United States Navy’s nuclear submarines—shaping the future of undersea innovation. Electric Boat engineers collaborate across disciplines and directly with our customer to develop advanced technical solutions. As an Engineering Co-op Trainee, students are immersed in real-world engineering activities with direct mentorship from senior staff. Trainees gain hands-on exposure to complex systems and cutting-edge projects, including work supporting the Columbia Class submarine design and enhancements to the Virginia Class fleet. This program is designed to provide a deep, applied learning experience equivalent to an academic term, enabling students to build critical technical and professional skills in a highly collaborative engineering environment. Applicants must be eligible and approved by their academic institution to participate in a full-time, for-credit co-op during the Fall 2026 term. Program Commitment & Academic Requirement This is a full-time, 4 to 6 month co-op program during the Fall 2026 academic semester Participation must be for academic credit through the student’s college or university This program replaces a traditional course load Students may not carry a full or part-time academic course schedule concurrently This opportunity is not a summer internship This is not a remote position Potential Placement All accepted students may be placed at any of the following facilities based on business need: Groton, CT New London, CT North Stonington, CT North Kingstown, RI Newport, RI Students may be assigned to one of many engineering organizations, including but not limited to: Platform Systems Engineering Software Engineering Ship Signatures Naval Architecture Fluid Systems Combat Systems Engineering Construction Support Engineering Test Engineering Propulsion Plant Structures, Shielding & Arrangement Propulsion Plant Fluid Systems Propulsion Plant Electrical Main Propulsion Machinery Hull and External Structures Internal Structures Life Cycle Engineering Pipe Stress Analysis, Computational Fluid Dynamics, & Shielding Analysis Solid Mechanics Please note: Due to the high volume of applications received, this program does not include interviews.
