About The Position

The 2025 Summer Intern position in the Human Genetics Department at Genentech offers a unique opportunity for PhD students to engage in impactful research by analyzing large biobank-scale datasets. The intern will work collaboratively with a dynamic team to leverage genetic data for advancing target discovery and precision medicine, contributing to significant projects in human health and disease.

Requirements

• Must be pursuing a PhD (enrolled student) in Bioinformatics, computer science, computational biology, genetic epidemiology, or a similar discipline.
• Proficient experience in programming with R or Python.
• Solid knowledge of command line interface (Bash).
• Demonstrated experience in design, quality control, and performing association analyses for common and rare variants in WES and WGS datasets.
• Proficient in software engineering practices, including version control using Git and executing parallel computing workflows.

Nice To Haves

• Experience working with biobank data such as UK Biobank, FinnGen, or All of Us.
• Experience working with Electronic Health Records (EHR) or other Real World Data (RWD).
• Experience with workflow management systems such as WDL, Snakemake, or other relevant languages.
• Excellent communication, collaboration, writing, and interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities

• Access and analyze biobank-scale datasets such as UK Biobank and All of Us.
• Support the human genetics team in leveraging genetic and clinically derived real-world data.
• Design, implement, and perform genetic analyses for target discovery and safety assessment.
• Work on key disease areas through collaborative projects.
• Create detailed documentation of work completed and analyses performed.
