About The Position

The Electrical Apprentice Signal Trainee position at Norfolk Southern is designed to train individuals to perform the duties of Signal Workers, who play a crucial role in ensuring compliance with FRA regulations and customer satisfaction while maintaining safe and efficient railroad operations. The position involves a comprehensive 52-week paid apprenticeship training program that includes both in-class theory and hands-on skill development in the field. Successful applicants will undergo various training phases, including signal training and on-the-job training in signal construction and maintenance.

Requirements

• High School diploma or GED required.
• 1-2 years of job-related experience minimum; 3-5 years preferred.
• CDL Class A License required (must secure within 111 days of hire).

Nice To Haves

• Technical Certification or Associate degree in Electrical Technician, Electronics Engineering, or Electrical Engineering preferred.

Responsibilities

• Perform FRA regulatory tests and inspections of signal systems and crossings.
• Install, repair, and maintain various equipment such as signal lights, switch machines, and crossing warning devices.
• Test and inspect signal systems including Automatic Block, Traffic Control, and Positive Train Control.
• Conduct cable locates, painting, and housekeeping of signal housings and equipment.
• Climb and troubleshoot signal structures and make electrical connections.
• Use a variety of hand tools, high-rail equipment, and test instruments.
• Perform construction duties including digging holes and trenches to lay cables and install equipment.
