About The Position

The 2025 Cartography/GIS Intern position in the Northeast Region is an opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience in geographic information systems (GIS) and cartography. The internship is designed for individuals who are eager to learn and contribute to the management of natural resources. The role involves working with various technologies, including ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and Land Resources Manager (LRM), to create and analyze geospatial data. The internship is expected to last from May to September 2025, with flexible hours ranging from 16 to 40 hours per week. A housing stipend of up to $1,000 per month may be available for eligible candidates.

Requirements

  • Current student in an undergraduate or graduate program majoring in Geography, GIS, Environmental Science, or related field.
  • A valid driver's license with two years of driving experience.
  • At least 18 years of age at the time of hire.
  • Demonstrated personal accountability and commitment to excellence.
  • Ability to learn new concepts and skills and apply them practically.

Nice To Haves

  • Coursework in GIS & Mapping, Forest Operations, Quantitative Methods, or related fields.
  • Basic computer skills including MS Office, Adobe, and ArcGIS.
  • Attention to detail and professional communication skills.
  • Experience driving on logging roads.

Responsibilities

  • Use GIS technologies to create work products and analyze existing data.
  • Design, compile, maintain, and edit spatial and tabular data for timber sale maps and road plans.
  • Maintain and update GIS transportation layers and attributes.
  • Support various programs including Product Sales, Silviculture, Agriculture, and Recreation.
  • Plan map layouts and techniques for mapping projects.
  • Provide GIS guidance and assistance to NE Region Staff.
  • Manipulate spatial and tabular data to produce maps and reports.
  • Gain knowledge of GPS functions and their integration into GIS products.
  • Develop electronic maps and reports for planning and tracking silvicultural activities.
  • Participate in fire suppression efforts and other duties as needed.
