About The Position

The Tutor - AVID position is part of the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program, which supports middle and high school students in their preparation for college. Tutors work under the direct supervision of the principal and AVID coordinator, assisting the AVID elective teacher to guide students towards academic and personal excellence. The role involves active participation in the learning and growth of students, with the goal of preparing them for successful college attendance.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree or evidence of earned college credit in education; or enrollment in a science, math, or liberal arts bachelor's program; or currently enrolled AVID student over the age of 18.
• Must be available for 16 hours of paid facilitator training.

Nice To Haves

• Previous student tutoring or mentoring experience.
• Experience in a community-based academic support program.
• Strong math background.

Responsibilities

• Take an active role in developing the academic and personal strengths of AVID students.
• Serve as a role model/mentor to AVID students by demonstrating appropriate academic and social behaviors.
• Determine concepts that need to be taught or retaught based on student notes and discussions.
• Evaluate student binders, including calendars and class notes.
• Become familiar with the materials in the AVID Curriculum Libraries.
• Conduct tutorial sessions in all content areas, including mathematics.
• Conduct mini lessons in writing, study skills, and other aspects of college preparation.
• Set an example of personal excellence and high expectations for AVID students.
• Work with students in various phases of the writing process.
• Communicate frequently with the AVID coordinator/teacher regarding student progress.

Benefits

• Hourly pay based on education, ranging from $15.00 to $23.75.
