The Registered Nurse Substitute provides for the promotion and maintenance of health in the school community. This role involves delivering professional nursing services, conducting health assessments, developing health care plans, and ensuring compliance with district policies and health care provider orders. The nurse will assess students for illness or injury, administer mandated screenings, and maintain effective communication with school personnel and parents to address health and safety needs. Additionally, the nurse will manage school health records, provide health-related classroom instruction, and participate in the multidisciplinary team for special education programs.

  • Provides professional nursing services including nursing assessments, identification of health problems, development of student health care plans, referrals for diagnosis and treatment, recommendations for educational modifications, follow-ups and evaluations.
  • Assesses students referred for illness or injury and provides first aid.
  • Administers mandated screenings (e.g. vision, dental, hearing) and makes referrals as needed.
  • Makes appropriate assessments and referrals for suspected abuse/neglect as a mandated reporter.
  • Maintains effective communication with administrators, teachers, other school personnel, and parents/guardians.
  • Orders supplies and materials as needed for the efficient functioning of the work unit.
  • Dispenses medications and/or trains other school employees to dispense medications.
  • Provides health information and counseling for students, parents, and staff.
  • Implements a communicable disease prevention and control program.
  • Manages school health records in accordance with district policy and state law.
  • Provides health-related classroom instruction as needed.
  • Acts as a liaison between the home, school, community health agencies, and the private medical sector.
  • Participates as a member of the multidisciplinary team in the identification, evaluation, and placement of students into special education programs.
  • Utilizes continuing education opportunities to enhance professional knowledge.
  • Participates as an active member of the school community, promoting health and wellness.
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding all school and health-related issues.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Possess knowledge of health standards and hazards, safety practices and procedures, stages of child development, pediatric and family nursing practices, community health concepts, and pertinent policies, codes, regulations, and laws.
  • Possess skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job.
  • Ability to schedule activities, gather and classify data, communicate effectively, work with diverse individuals, problem solve, analyze issues, interpret guidelines, and adapt to changing work priorities.
  • Bilingual skills preferred.
  • Qualified to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Washington and hold an unrestricted license.
  • Current First Aid/CPR Card.
  • Must qualify to work in the proximity of children under the conditions of a WSP/FBI background check.
  • Applications from LPN's with experience to be considered.
  • Community Health or School Nurse experience preferred.
