About The Position

The Bus Driver operates a school bus and related equipment to provide safe and orderly transportation of students and other authorized persons on assigned routes and to and from designated locations. The position requires adherence to safety protocols, effective communication with students and staff, and the ability to manage student behavior while ensuring a safe environment during transportation.

Requirements

  • Valid Class B - CDL Drivers' License with 'P' and 'S' endorsements.
  • Must successfully complete TEA School Bus Driver certification class.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must submit to prescribed DOT drug testing program.
  • Ability to complete required bus driver safety training.
  • Must be insurable under fleet policy restrictions.
  • Must have an annual physical examination.
  • Able to perform occasional physical labor.
  • Able to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Able to use maps and other systems to follow routes and locate addresses.
  • Able to manage student behavior.
  • Able to communicate effectively with others.
  • Able to operate the bus.

Responsibilities

  • Operate the vehicle in a safe, efficient manner while following the assigned route and adhering to established schedules.
  • Anticipate problems such as traffic, weather, road conditions, and schedule changes and make necessary adjustments to ensure student safety and reduce delays.
  • Perform pre- and post-trip inspections according to specifications to ensure the bus can be operated safely and notify the supervisor of needed repairs.
  • Keep assigned bus clean and maintain an appropriate level of fuel.
  • Report all accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries, and mechanical problems and complete required corresponding reports.
  • Communicate with schools, students, and the community in a positive manner to encourage cooperation and respect.
  • Instruct students on safe entering, exiting, and passenger rules and regulations.
  • Supervise students while they board and leave the bus and cross the street.
  • Perform emergency evacuation of students on the bus when warranted.
  • Maintain discipline and use effective behavior management control over groups of students.
  • Help students with disabilities get on and off the bus according to their individual needs.
  • Attend safety, certification, and defensive driving courses as required.
  • Observe all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses.
  • Ensure proper condition of emergency equipment, such as first aid kit, fire extinguisher, and reflector.
  • Correct unsafe conditions in the work area and promptly report conditions that are not immediately correctable to the supervisor.
  • Operate and monitor two-way radio equipment to communicate with the transportation office and other drivers.
  • Provide written reports and discuss with supervisors all accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries, and student behavior.
  • Complete and maintain accurate, up-to-date, and timely records and reports.
  • Maintain regular and reliable attendance.
  • Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  • Maintain an appropriate level of technology competence to meet the current and future needs of Alief.
  • Implement alternative methods of instruction as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
