The Gerontology Program at California State University, Sacramento offers an interdisciplinary approach to understanding the human aging process and the various challenges faced by older adults and their families in contemporary society. The position of Lecturer in the Gerontology Department is designed for part-time instructional faculty who will engage in teaching responsibilities, which include preparing for classes, delivering lectures, grading assignments, and holding office hours for student consultations. The specific course assignments, including their timing and modality, will be determined by the Department Chair in consultation with the College Dean, based on the needs of the department and enrollment patterns. Part-time lecturers are appointed conditionally, depending on enrollment and budgetary considerations. The hiring process for this lecturer pool occurs when there are instructional needs that cannot be met by existing faculty, which may arise from changes in enrollment, tenure-track faculty assignments, or other departmental factors. Initial appointments are typically for one semester, although there are occasions when appointments may extend for the entire academic year. Renewals of these appointments are contingent upon departmental needs, available funding, and the lecturer's performance. It is common for appointments to be finalized shortly before the semester begins. The rank and salary for lecturer faculty are determined by the hiring department, taking into account the candidate's professional and teaching experience as well as their educational background. Most new lecturers are appointed at the Lecturer A or B rank, with salary ranges that reflect a full-time teaching load of 15 weighted teaching units (WTUs). For example, a Lecturer A assigned to teach 3 units would receive a pro-rated salary based on the full-time rate, resulting in a total compensation for the semester that is calculated accordingly. Overall, this position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the education of students in the field of Gerontology, fostering an understanding of aging and its implications in society.
