Operates a multiple of production machines such as saws, presses, drills, and other hand and/or powered equipment, as well as automatic presses and similar equipment which may require raw material to be loaded onto stock reels. The role involves studying blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, or specifications to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished workpieces, sequence of operations, and limited setup requirements. The operator measures dimensions on workpieces, starts and runs machinery to produce products, detects malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, and adjusts machine controls or control media as required. They verify the conformance of finished workpieces to specifications, adjust and operate machines on trial runs to verify accuracy of machine settings or programmed control data, and test the operation of units to ensure functionality and performance. Assembling products as needed is also part of the job.
