About The Position

Des Moines Public Schools is seeking qualified applicants for the 26-27 school year to serve as a 1st Grade Teacher. This position will start in August 2026. Any elementary endorsed applicant (K-6) is encouraged to apply. Please note: The posted salary is drawn from the 25-26 Salary Schedule as the 26-27 Salary Schedule is not yet final. TITLE: General Education Teacher - 1st Grade POSITION TYPE: TCHR HIRING SPECIFICATIONS: Required: Valid Iowa teaching license (K-6 Classroom). Knowledge of subject, curriculum, effective teaching methods. Demonstrated effectiveness in oral and written communications. Desired: Previous classroom teaching experience. Experience in an urban school district. BASIC FUNCTION: Responsible for planning and delivering a high-quality educational program to meet children’s academic and social-emotional needs. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Deliver daily lessons, aligned to state and district standards that meet students’ individual needs and ensure growth. Create a culturally inclusive classroom that meets the academic and social emotional needs of students. Participate in building and district professional learning communities to plan for instruction, analyze data, and create assessments. Monitor student learning on a daily basis. Use multiple data points to guide and individualize instruction. Communicate with families on a regular basis. Participate in professional development. Demonstrate consistent progress on meeting the eight Iowa Teaching Standards ADDITIONAL ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (for every DMPS position): Attend work on a prompt and regular basis. Maintain confidentiality. Maintain satisfactory and harmonious working relationships with the public, students, and other employees. Assist with other duties as may be assigned.

Requirements

  • Valid Iowa teaching license (K-6 Classroom).
