About The Position

Steel America, a division of Colonna's Shipyard, is seeking 1st Class Structural Welders to support operations at our site in Norfolk, VA. The role involves welding together metal components of products as specified by blueprints, weld symbols, material markings, work orders, welding procedures, or verbal instructions, using welding equipment. Responsibilities include preparing material surfaces to be welded, completing weld processes in various positions, operating welding equipment, cleaning weld joints, and instructing apprentices. The position requires maintaining a high level of production welding inspections and performing other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • At least seven (7) years' experience as a Welder.
  • Ability to perform multi-pass, all position fillet and butt welds using SMAW, GMAW, and FCAW.
  • Knowledge of welding techniques, mirror welding, preheat and inter-pass temperature.
  • Ability to use hand tools and instruments associated with the trade.
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently with others.
  • Comprehension of weld sequence sketches and templates.
  • Ability to enter and move through manholes and work in confined spaces.
  • Steady and reliable worker with regular attendance.
  • Ability to follow instructions.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience working in Steel America fabrication shop preferred.
  • Prefer previous technical training.
  • New Aircraft Carrier Construction experience.
  • New Submarine Construction experience.

Responsibilities

  • Weld together metal components of products as specified by blueprints and instructions.
  • Prepare all material surfaces to be welded, ensuring cleanliness and readiness.
  • Complete weld processes in flat, horizontal, vertical, or overhead positions.
  • Operate manual or semi-automatic welding equipment using various welding processes.
  • Clean or degrease weld joints or work pieces.
  • Set up and operate welding equipment and select proper electrodes.
  • Perform grinding and joint preparation for NDT processes.
  • Read and understand Chemist and Competent Persons reports for safety.
  • Instruct apprentices and fellow welders.
  • Maintain a high level of first pass through rate on production welding inspections.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
