About The Position

Steel America On-Site Machining, a division of Colonna's Shipyard, is seeking 1st Class Manual Field Machinists to work multiple on & off-site projects in and around Norfolk, VA. The position involves routine blueprint reading and technical writing to accomplish work tasks, daily use of tools such as micrometers, height gauges, Vernier calipers, and dividing heads to support tasking, and operating machine tools in varying tolerances according to need. Responsibilities include non-routine maintenance and repair of portable machine tools, routine use of hoisting and rigging equipment for heavy pieces, and determining system tolerances. Daily tasks will involve work on rudders and steering systems, bearings and bushings, engines, motors, generators, propulsion shafting, seals, valve work, propellers, pumps, and deck machinery. The role also includes instructing lower classes of machinists, managing work/personnel assignments, and requisitioning job materials. Upholding a safe work environment is key, requiring safe handling/use/storage of gases, safe work practices, PPE, and adherence to lock-out/tag-out and confined space practices.

Requirements

  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • At least seven (7) years of experience as a Machinist.
  • Experience with manual lathes and mills.
  • Ability to read and comprehend blueprints, drawings, and technical documents.
  • Adept mechanical ability, manual dexterity, and hand/eye coordination.
  • Clean driving record.

  • Work on deck machinery including gear boxes and alignments.
  • Instruct lower classes of machinists and manage work assignments.
