About The Position

Provide assistance to the Party Chief and performs duties as directed, by making exact measurements and supporting all disciplines with a quality layout for unit installation. Provide data relevant to the shape, contour, gravitation, location, elevation, or dimension of land or land features on or near the earth's surface for engineering, construction, and other purposes.

Requirements

  • At least 1 years of experience working in the industrial construction field with layout or survey responsibilities.
  • Must have a developing knowledge of layout and survey work using mathematics to solve problems by adding and subtracting, multiplication and dividing and perform these operations using units of measurement for distance and have a general understanding of algebra, trigonometry, and geometry, and be able to verify mathematical calculations for gathering physical survey data, document technical design details, analyze physical, survey, or geographic data, survey land to measure or determine features, determine operational criteria or specifications, calibrate scientific or technical equipment, calculate geographic positions from survey data.
  • Ability to understand and follow directions.
  • In addition, must have all necessary tools (see Surveyor - Rodman tool list).
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • All applicants must be able to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements (if selected) which may include any/all of the following: criminal/civil background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search, in compliance with any applicable laws and regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Holds level or stadia rod at designated points to assist in determining elevations and laying out stakes for mapmaking, construction, land, and other surveys
  • Place stakes at designated points and drives them into ground at specified elevation
  • Cuts and clears brush and trees or other possible obstructions from line of survey
  • Measures distance between survey points with steel or cloth tape or surveyor's chain
  • Marks measuring points with markers, paint sticks, tacks, scratches or stakes
  • Load/unload equipment and prepare for daily jobs
  • Help calculate heights, depths, relative positions, property lines, and other characteristics of terrain or current installations
  • Determine longitudes and latitudes of important features and boundaries in survey areas using theodolites, transits, levels, and satellite-based global positioning systems (GPS)
  • Record the results of surveys including the shape, contour, location, elevation, and dimensions of land or land features
  • Adjust surveying instruments to maintain their accuracy
  • Participate in all safety related processes and programs as requested
  • Engage with your work team to ensure we achieve zero injuries
  • Understand that no job is so important that your safety and that of your crew will be compromised
  • Watch for hazards and report any concerns to your supervisor or safety professional
  • If needed, use your stop work authority until the issue is resolved
  • Report all accidents and near misses to supervisor; participate in investigation process as needed
  • Participate in all pre-job work planning and safety discussions; Identify safety hazards you or other employees may be subject to and take all necessary corrective action to eliminate and/or mitigate hazards
  • Understand and respond appropriately to all safety hazards and warning devices (ie back-up alarms, smell of smoke, different colored warning tags, warning sirens)
  • Understand, support, and follow lockout/tag out procedures
  • Attend site specific training and assure you follow all procedures as out lined in training
  • Follow established safety rules and regulations and maintain a safe and clean work environment
  • Use effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers and fractions rapidly and accurately
  • Listen to co-workers suggestions, safety concerns, and recommendations giving full attention to what they are saying and take the time to understand the points being made, asking questions and providing feedback when appropriate
  • Coordinate work with other crafts and co-workers on the job
  • Actively participate in on-the-job training and mentoring opportunities with co-workers in your craft when provided
  • Produce quality work, meeting requirements of plans, specifications and industry standards
  • Learn to read and understand plans and specifications
  • Visualize two dimensional drawings in three dimensions
  • With regard to that portion of the work assigned, assist in planning, installing and/or repair systems in accordance with those plans and specifications
  • Assist journeymen in laying out work and learn to perform layout independently
