About The Position

The Port Townsend School District is seeking a 1.0 FTE School Counselor for a leave replacement position at Port Townsend High School and OCEAN School for the 2024-25 school year. The anticipated dates for this position are from March 24 to June 30, 2025. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing counseling support to students, collaborating with staff and community resources, and contributing to a positive school culture.

Requirements

  • Valid Washington State Educational Staff Associate Certificate with endorsement for School Counseling.
  • Demonstrated ability to consult with parents regarding parenting concerns and problems that are related to students' school adjustment and classroom/instructional performance.
  • Demonstrated ability to listen and react in a positive and professional manner.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality per district policy and state and federal laws.
  • Ability to use technology and a variety of software programs.
  • Ability to maintain a professional office environment (e.g. work independently, set priorities, maintain accurate records, responding to different needs on different days, meet deadlines.)
  • Organized and reliable in designing interventions and services and following through to their completion and evaluation of effectiveness.
  • Willingness to coordinate and collaborate with community agencies for the purpose of building comprehensive services for our students and families.
  • Understanding of Washington State law in regards to communication and exchange of information with other staff, families and agencies, when necessary and in the student's best interest.
  • Possess solid verbal and written communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Successful experience as a full time counselor at the high school level is preferred.
  • Demonstrated understanding and support of place-based learning.

Responsibilities

  • Relate in a positive way to the full range of students, staff, parents and community; and contribute to a positive school culture.
  • Monitor student progress in academic and social arenas; work cooperatively with staff and families to address areas of concern.
  • Work cooperatively with community resources to provide academic, career and personal services to students and families.
  • Work cooperatively with other staff, administrators and support personnel in a team approach to solve individual learning problems.
  • Provide individual and group social emotional counseling support for all students.
  • Work with teachers and principal to create a positive learning environment and supportive school culture throughout the school.
  • Provide guidance to students in achieving academic success through individual and group interventions.
  • Organize and/or conduct training seminars/workshops on topics of interest to families, including college admissions, financial aid and scholarship support.
  • Appropriately intervene in crisis situations.
  • Assist students and families in establishing long-term goals and in planning for graduation, post high school training, education or employment.
  • Provide leadership and skill with specific counseling duties, (e.g. graduation requirements, master scheduling, student advising, High School and Beyond Plans, scholarships, college admissions, etc.)
  • Provide developmentally appropriate classroom-guidance activities to support the academic, career and personal growth of all students.
  • Facilitate student applications for post high school placements including university admissions, career training programs, military service and employment.
  • May serve on various school, department and/or district committees to assist in decision making for policy and procedure issues.
  • Work cooperatively and productively with the other counselor, and registrar/counseling office secretary.
  • Identify and refer children in need of specialized services and instruction.
  • Facilitate student assistance (Care Team) processes and lead the student intervention team in designing and monitoring intervention plans.
  • Serve as the building's 504 coordinator, assessment coordinator, Highly Capable coordinator and AP coordinator.
  • Strive to improve professional knowledge and expertise through personal study and formal training opportunities.
  • Collaborate with school to plan and deliver Maritime and place-based learning in alignment with the district's mission and vision.
  • Support and assist with implementing the district's and school's MTSS (Multi-Tiered Systems of Supports) and PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention Supports) initiatives.
