About The Position

The position involves performing materials sampling and testing on projects and in the laboratory, conducting inspections at plants and on projects, compiling and maintaining test results, and reporting findings. The role also includes maintaining and operating testing equipment and providing engineering technical support and assistance to the assigned program area.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of materials sampling and field testing methods and procedures.
  • Skill in preparing samples and performing laboratory tests.
  • Knowledge of quality control and quality assurance concepts and practices.
  • Skill in the use of computers and job-relevant software programs.

Nice To Haves

  • A combination of training, experience, or education in Civil Engineering or related field.
  • Current possession of required materials certifications.
  • Prior experience in materials testing, construction, maintenance, or a related field.

Responsibilities

  • Communicate with VDOT staff and external staff to proactively resolve issues.
  • Advise supervisor on critical developments and field observations.
  • Apply advanced principles and practices of engineering technology to assigned program areas.
  • Interpret policies and procedures and apply them in daily work assignments.
  • Maintain testing equipment inventory and perform routine maintenance and repairs.
  • Inspect and approve materials placement techniques, testing, and equipment at project sites.
  • Train or assist field staff on proper testing procedures and preparation of samples.
  • Compute and document test results, compare with plans and specifications.
  • Review or inspect field work performed by VDOT staff or contractors for compliance.
  • Perform laboratory tests on materials samples and document test results.
  • Inspect materials production at plants and perform statistical sampling and analysis.
  • Document, enter, and complete required data such as work orders and schedules.
  • Compile and maintain automated and written reports and project records.
  • Address questions related to assigned program area and provide technical assistance.
  • Manage time to ensure project work is completed efficiently.
