Job Description

We’re looking for a fully remote, US-based front-end engineering manager. You will be working directly with our CTO, our engineers, and helping to shape the team, process and engineering culture. Teal’s front-end team works on a variety of projects, ranging from a web-client to a Chrome extension to widgets, and balancing this workload is hard. You would be both managing the engineers as well as project managing our feature rollouts.

Responsibilities

  • Manage a team of 4 to 7 senior-level front-end engineers, providing guidance and support to help them achieve their career goals and maximize their potential.
  • Collaborate with product managers and other stakeholders to define project goals, scope, and timelines. Ensure successful project delivery by optimizing resource allocation and addressing any roadblocks.
  • Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement within the engineering team. Encourage best practices, knowledge sharing, and the adoption of new technologies.
  • Participate in the recruitment and onboarding of new front-end engineering talent. Contribute to the growth of the team by identifying top talent and helping to build a diverse and high-performing team.
  • Act as a bridge between the front-end engineering team and the CTO, as well as other departments. Ensure clear communication, alignment of goals, and a deep understanding of the business objectives.
  • Identify potential risks or technical challenges early in the project lifecycle and proactively develop mitigation strategies.
  • While your primary responsibility will be management and project management, you will still code when possible. This might equate to 20% to 30% of your time.

Requirements

  • 2+ years of direct management or team leadership including hiring, performance management and project delivery timelines
  • 5+ years experience of hands on front end development with modern JavaScript frameworks such as React and Typescript

Nice-to-Haves

  • Working in an early stage company (series Seed & A startups) where process grows along with our team size.
  • Experience building SaaS products.
  • Experience working in a 100% remote environment

What Great Looks Like

Day One:

  • Meet the team, and begin to absorb the current processes and goals.

Week One:

  • Familiarity with the team, the culture, the intentions of the company, the processes of the engineering team.
  • Ideas for improvements in all aspects of the role are starting to form.

Month One:

  • Identified key areas for improvement and begun implementing changes, whether in terms of optimizing development workflows, enhancing code quality, or fostering a culture of continuous learning.
  • One-On-Ones with all front-end engineers, yielding deeper understanding of the team, and how to best enable each person to succeed.
  • Strong working relationship with the CTO

Month 3:

  • Helped grow the team, possibly including sourcing, certainly including interviewing.
  • Demonstrated process improvements, ideally with data to back up how its helping.

What We Offer

  • Salary: $180,000 - $200,000
  • Incentive Stock Options proportionate to salary

Technical Interview

  • Goals: Deeper understanding of qualifications
  • 1 hour Zoom with CTO and CEO
  • 1 hour Zoom with a senior engineer
  • We talk through scenarios, deep dives into your background and preferences, and do our best to see if it feels like a fit.

Work Culture Interview

  • Goal: Meet more of the Team
  • 60 minute zoom with 2 Teal people
  • We will provide the question and guidance in advance.

Reference Interviews

  • We will ask for 2 references from your most recent managers that you are comfortable using as references.

Our Current Team & Engineering Process

Our engineering team is currently 7 people: 4 frontend, 3 backend

We are a kanban styled team, with VERY few meetings, and very light process.
