About the position
The Head of Vector Engineering at Voyager Therapeutics will be responsible for developing and implementing a strategic agenda and roadmap for gene therapy platforms and programs. They will work closely with the Chief Scientific Officer and VP of Novel Capsid Discovery to drive innovation and enhance Voyager's leadership in CNS gene therapy. This role will involve leading a world-class gene therapy engineering organization, managing transgene-related activities, and leveraging technical opportunities for business advantage. The Head of Vector Engineering will also play a key role in business development and be responsible for the interrogation and reduction-to-practice of candidate sequences for clinical application.
Responsibilities
- Establish and lead the strategic gene therapy AAV vector engineering roadmap
- Provide exemplary scientific leadership for the company's AAV research programs
- Recruit, motivate, and develop a world-class gene therapy engineering organization
- Manage transgene-related activities in discovery research and drive innovation in payload/cargo design
- Support the protection, creation, and expansion of the company's intellectual property
- Participate in the selection, prioritization, and acceleration of asset development
- Leverage technical opportunities and talent for business advantage and innovation initiatives
- Play a major role in business development by recommending key initiatives, plans, collaborations, and potential partnerships
- Present to the company's Board of Directors, Scientific Advisory Board, external stakeholders, and the investment community
- Responsible for interrogation and reduction-to-practice of candidate sequences for clinical application in gene therapy initiatives
- Work with Research to establish and test constructs in appropriate model systems
- Ensure data integrity throughout the vector design team, including plasmid nomenclature and archiving
- Act as a key point of contact with cross-functional stakeholders to ensure suitability of vector designs.
Requirements
- Strong scientific leadership and ability to articulate and implement a strategic vision for AAV gene therapy vector genome research
- Experience in developing and managing gene therapy engineering organizations
- Knowledge of payload/cargo design and ability to drive innovation in this area
- Ability to build and maintain collaborations with industry and academic partners
- Expertise in intellectual property protection and expansion
- Experience in selecting and prioritizing assets for development
- Strong communication and presentation skills, including the ability to present to board members, scientific advisory boards, and external stakeholders
- Proficiency in interrogating candidate sequences and translating them into clinical applications
- Familiarity with in vitro and/or in vivo screening methods
- Attention to detail and ability to ensure data integrity within the vector design team
- Strong collaboration and stakeholder management skills
